Tour Details

DAY 1

Windhoek – Sesriem (350 km) (L,D) (Camping)

You will be collected between 08:00 & 08:30

We travel over the Auas Mountains and along scenic roads as we pass small communal lands on a beautiful geological route as we head south-west to the desert.

Going through the Gamsberg Mountain Range, we reach open plains and  are soon at our first stopoff in the tiny town of Solitaire. We will stop here for some refreshments before continuing on through desert scenery.

We cross some open grass savannahs before the terrain gives way to the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib. We aim to arrive at our camp during the late afternoon and watch the sunset colours glow and change on distant mountains to the east. Tonight your guide will prepare dinner on a open fire under the beautiful desert sky of Namibia

Day 2

Sesriem – Agama (220km) (B,L,D) (Camping)

A pre dawn start is essential this morning as we want to catch the soft morning light of the sunrise on the dunes as we drive. The light casts strong contrasts of colour on the edges of the dunes and offers stunning views from the dry river bed we travel through it. Our first stop will be at the famous Dune 45 and its most photogenic dune. Here you will make your way up on the dune to catch the amazing unforgettable sunrise. Your guide will prepare your breakfast right at the foot of the dune and after a short break we will leave the vehicle for a educational walk with your guide.

We reach the unexplainable dead vlei in the Sosusvlei area by walking the last 5 km through the dunes. The walk is like nothing else, enjoying the changing light and coolness of the morning. Ancient mineral pans, stunted Camel Thorn Trees and the chance of seeing a Gemsbok or maybe an Ostrich. This makes the photo opportunities perfect.

We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei, and as the day wears on we return to the camp for lunch to escape the heat of the afternoon. As the day cools off in the late afternoon we will take a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon.

DAY 3

Agama – Swakopmund (300km) (B) (Chalets)

An early start today, as we are heading north-west to the seaside town of Swakopmund.  Leaving the dune fields far behind us as we are soon back into the mountain desert.  We cross the Tropic of Capricorn and traverse both the Gaub and the Kuiseb mountain passes, driving down to the dry river bed at the bottom of the canyon before climbing up the other side, watching the spectacular desert landscape unfold before us.

From the mountains we cross the desolate “Namib Gravel Plains” before reaching the coastal sand dunes at the habour town of Walvis Bay.  We will stop for a picnic lunch beside the ocean and there will be time for a posibble chance to see the flamingos and other bird life in the Walvis Bay lagoon before continuing the now short drive into Swakopmund.

The Swakopmund section of the trip is designed to allow people to relax either with the group, or on their own.  Only breakfast is provided this day as  this is to allow you to plan your time here with as much flexibility as possible, and not to be tied to group meal times.  It also gives you the chance to sample some of the excellent local cafes and restaurants.  The seafood in Swakopmund is superb.  Your guide will offer to organise a group meal in a local restaurant for this evening.  Participation is recommended but by no means required.

Dinner this evening in not included in the price of the safari and will be for the client’s own expense

Day 4

Swakopmund (Chalets)

Today is a free day.  The idea is to allow time for everybody to do their own thing.  Swakopmund is a very pleasant seaside town with lots of shops, a good stretch of beach (although the Atlantic here is quite cold) and an open-air curio market.  There is also a very good museum and the Namibian National Marine Aquarium is located in Swakopmund.

Alternatively, there are various optional activities that can be arranged.  These include:

  • Aeroplane and Microlight Flights over the desert.
  • Scenic drives
  • Fishing trips (both from the beach or in a boat)
  • Four-wheel motorcycle (quad bike) trips into the desert and over the sand dunes around Swakopmund
  • Boarding trips (also in the dunes)
  • Skydiving
  • Surfing
  • Bird-watching

Many other activities are available.

Your tour guide will discuss all the possible options with you before you reach Swakopmund and will offer to make bookings in advance of your arrival.  (N.B.  All extra activities and excursions in Swakopmund are subject to availability and are made at the clients’ own risk and expense).

Dinner this evening is not included in the price of the safari and will be at the client’s own expense.

Day 5

(wild camping)

Today we are going to a very historical open plain, deserted homestead of a local community that have lived for decades in this area, The Topnaars. We will learn the way of life and the surviving methods of this people. In the middle of the desert, as the day wears out, the evening will start by local men telling stories, before we make our way to the wild camp platform. Just before bed your guide will unfold the Namibian sky with an astronomy lesson.
